What Is PVC Plastic Sheet Roll and Stretch Film Made of?

2019-12-05

PVC, the abbreviated version of polyvinyl chloride, is one of the major consumed plastics in the world, next to PET and PP, the widely used plastics in the world. PVC is a naturally white and brittle plastic, of course prior to the additions of plasticizers.

PVC is produced in two general forms, rigid or soft plastic, namely, PVC plastic sheet and roll.

PVC plastic sheet, or rigid PVC, is an unplasticized polymer, but often contains mineral fillers such as talc and calcium carbonate. The flexible, plasticized polymer is known as PVC plastic roll, or soft PVC roll. Take it literally, PVC roll is softer and more amenable to bending than rigid PVC due to the addition of plasticizers like phthalates (e.g. diisononyl phthalate or DINP).

PVC stretch film, also called stretch wrap, is a highly stretchable plastic film mainly made from Linear Low-density Polyethylene (LLDPE). It is often used to wrap around items to keep them tightly bound, which helps to reduce the risk of product loss and discourage load tampering.

Features and Applications of PVC Plastic Sheet and Roll

PVC plastic sheet and roll are used in a wide range of applications based on their physical properties and characteristics.

PVC plastic sheet can be preserved for a longer period of time. It is in more demand in the manufacturing sector than the PVC plastic roll because of its stronger thermal, mechanical and chemical resistivity.

PVC plastic sheet is easy to cut into smaller pieces and can be fastened with glue, making it a good alternative to metal. Rigid PVC sheet is widely used in construction as a pipe for plumbing, siding, window frames, pipes, and borders mainly due to the fact that it can tolerate bad weather conditions. Both PVC plastic sheet and roll function well in a wide range of temperatures and operating pressures. Rigid PVC is also used in leather-like or waterproof clothing materials, shoes, toys, car interiors, and car cables, shower curtains, and numerous other plastic products. PVC plastic sheet is also easy to fabricate, glue, paint, and screen-print.

PVC plastic roll generally has less utility because it cannot be preserved for a long time due to the excessive application of softeners.

Flexible PVC roll is commonly used in construction as an insulation material on electrical wires. Beyond that, it is most frequently used in flooring for residential areas, hospitals, hotels, schools, and other places where requires a sterile environment. Even in some cases, it acts as a replacement for rubber alternatives.

Characteristics and Comparison of Materials used in PVC Plastic Sheet/Roll

Regarding the physical strengths of materials used in PVC plastic sheet and roll, differences exist. PVC plastic sheet is dense and more resistant to gas and air pressure than the PVC plastic roll. The density of the PVC sheet can measure from 1.3 to 1.45 g/cm3 compared to the density of PVC roll, which is 1.1 to 1.35 g/cm3. This material density has directly affected the lifespan of the PVC plastic sheet/roll.

PVC plastic sheet/roll both can be processed as a thermoplastic. Rigid PVC is mainly extruded into the PVC plastic sheet, tube, and profile, but it can also be injection molded. While PVC plastic roll can also be extruded (films) and injection molded. PVC can easily be welded and glued.

Benefits of PVC Plastic Sheet & Roll

The biggest benefit to the PVC roll is that it is flexible and can be used in plumbing and water treatment applications where need to go around corners. PVC plastic roll can be processed by thermoplastic methods and features a range of flexibility levels depending on the content of plasticizer. The rigid PVC sheet has no bend so to use it in this manner would require corner pieces of PVC pipe. It is estimated that more than 75% of PVC pipe will have a lifetime in excess of 40 years with potential in-service lives of up to 100 years.

Flex PVC plastic roll is durable yet with certain structural restrictions. PVC sheet is very rigid and will not just break or crack. It takes a lot of effort to destroy a PVC sheet.

Generally speaking, both the PVC plastic sheet and roll are readily available and really cost-effective. They have high density and can exceptionally resist deformation compared to other types of plastic films. On top of that, it has good tensile strength, but not as good as the PVC stretch film. According to statistics, PVC plastic sheet/roll accounted for 60% of European PVC production in 2006. This indicates that the recorded use of PVC film has proved its excellent performance, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, PVC plastic sheet or PVC plastic roll is estimated to remain as one of the most popular plastics used in building and construction in the following decades.
